Vincent D’Onofrio On-board to Narrate Heroes Behind the Badge Documentary

Washington, DC — The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund and Modern City Entertainment are pleased to announce that Emmy® Award-nominated feature-film actor and National Law Enforcement Museum National Spokesperson, Vincent D’Onofrio, has signed on to narrate Heroes Behind the Badge, a moving and gripping documentary about the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers serving across America.

Directed by two-time British Academy Award winner Wayne Derrick and set for release in fall 2012, Heroes Behind the Badge aims to change the way the public perceives the men and women of law enforcement. The film will highlight some of the unselfish acts of bravery law enforcement professionals commit each day in the line of duty.

Though many are familiar with Vincent D’Onofrio’s work as an actor, they might not know about his dedication to the law enforcement community and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. His work with Heroes Behind the Badge joins a long list of ways D’Onofrio has continually shown his support for law enforcement.

“We are thrilled to have Vincent D’Onofrio working with us,” said Heroes Behind the Badge Director Wayne Derrick. “I could not think of a more fitting person to narrate this inspiring film,” he said.

Filmed throughout the U.S., Heroes Behind the Badge will highlight the lives of four fallen officers and the enormous impact their passing has had on their family members, colleagues, and community. The film will also feature the stories of three officers who narrowly escaped their assailants. These living legends will share their personal insights about how their near-fatal encounters have affected their lives.

Produced in partnership with the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, Heroes Behind the Badge will also highlight the National Police Week events held in Washington, DC, including the annual May 13th Candlelight Vigil—where the names of fallen officers added to the Memorial each year are read aloud and formally dedicated—and the annual National Peace Officers Memorial Day service held at the U.S. Capitol on May 15.

“Vincent D’Onofrio has been a long-time supporter and friend of law enforcement,” said Craig W. Floyd, Chairman & CEO of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. “He is an excellent addition to Heroes Behind the Badge and we are privileged to work with him on this project,” Mr. Floyd added.

Vincent D'Onofrio, Honouring Hero's

"V" IS FOR VINCENT…Vincent D’Onofrio, that is. Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. We encounter them every single day, whether or not we recognize them as such. The true heroes do not do what they do for fame, glory, awards, rewards, or even thanks. They do it because that’s who they are. True heroism is a generosity of spirit that is innate—a purity of heart and bravery in the face of fears of all kinds. Heroes watch over us, rescue us, eliminate dangers around us, and give us comfort in the dark times. There are heroes who teach our children, heal our sick, build our roads, and care for our environment. And Vincent understands all this. This man with a talent as brilliant as the sun chooses to donate much of his time and energy to give back to those who give so much of themselves. He teaches acting seminars to those who hunger for his knowledge about the subject, and he works tirelessly for all the causes he believes in. He is the Spokesperson for the National Law Enforcement Museum, which honors law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty and informs the public about the dangers that our police face every day. (www.nleomf.org) In his work with the Heroes Health Project and the Meth Cops Project, he has sacrificed much of his personal privacy to be the public face of their humble request to receive better health care. He will be assisting with the Ride for a Hero near Salt Lake City May 17-19 to raise money for the Utah Meth Cops to help pay for their detox program. This is “the only project in the world helping ailing police officers, who have been exposed to toxic meth labs, regain their quality of life. They put their lives on the line to make their community safer and they are paying the price with their own health.” And the Utah Meth Cops Project is all about reversing that. (www.utah-detox.org - a non-profit organization) I’m not sure how many of us would have the courage to give so much, but the most admirable Vincent has chosen to stand with these heroes. And those who assist our many heroes are heroes in their own right. May he—and they—be dearly blessed and receive all the appreciation and support they so richly deserve.

The Business of Giving: Vincent D'Onofrio of "Criminal Intent" to Auction Acting Lessons for a Great Cause

Minyanville
Michael Erb
March 20th, 2012

After years of working on "Law & Order," the TV star has come to understand that real-life cops "are not the type of people to ask for help."
Actor Vincent D’Onofrio has played a troubled marine trainee in Full Metal Jacket and a marauding alien bug in Men in Black. These days he's best recognized for his role as Detective Robert Goren on Law & Order: Criminal Intent.  And now, he’s offering acting lessons for a good cause.

Mr. D’Onofrio is working with the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, taking part in a Charity Buzz auction that ends tomorrow. The highest bidder gets three acting sessions with D’Onofrio, a graduate of the famed Actors Studio and the American Stanislavski Theatre.

The NLEOMF is dedicated to honoring law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty and inform the public about the dangers police face every day. The charity has built a memorial to fallen officers of every branch, located in the Judiciary Square section of Washington DC. Now the fund is building a museum to open near the current memorial.  The National Law Enforcement Memorial Museum is slated to open in 2014.

According to D’Onofrio, it will be quite the sight.

“One of the most incredible things about the museum is that there’s going to be a glass bridge that stretches across the main entrance of the museum," D'Onofrio explains in a phone call from his home in New York. "And inside the glass bridge, there's going to be a thin blue line. That line is going to be made up of all the fallen officers up to that point, and names added to it all the time. It’s going to be an incredible thing."
According to NLEOMF statistics, there's an officer killed every 53 hours in the US.  Their new preliminary data for 2011 calculates 173 police men and women died in the line of duty last year. The data also shows that deaths of officers have gone up 13% since 2010, and 42% since 2009.

“I’ve been involved in law enforcement stuff for years now,” D’Onofrio told me. His work on Law & Order compelled him to help law enforcement officers in any way he could.  “I think that because I ended up meeting so many law enforcers -- local, all over the country, all over the world actually -- I started to know a lot about the behind the scenes kind of stuff with their jobs. They're not the type of people to ask for help.

“I just think it’s important that we do this for everybody and try to help out,” he adds.

If you wish to take part in the auction, you can bid here.  Head to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, to make a direct donation.
