Chelsea Handler – a comedian whose inflammatory remarks have earned comparisons to Howard Stern, Joan Rivers and Chris Rock – will be starring in the upcoming film Mall, which is set to be directed by Joe Hahn, best known for being Linkin Park’s DJ. Handler will star as a restless housewife in Mall, a dark role in a film that producer and star Vincent D’Onofrio (Law & Order: Criminal Intent) said is ”a comment on social violence.”
“It begins as a man walks through the front door of a suburban mall armed to the teeth, causing five strangers to embark on a night that will change them forever,” explained D’Onofrio. “As the bullets fly, one teenage boy hurtles through the night on a collision course with the man he will become.”
Mall is an adaptation of the 2001 novel of the same name, written by Eric Bogosian. The author will appear in the film as a store owner in the shopping center. The timing of Mall works well for D’Onofrio, as Law & Order: Criminal Intent‘s tenth and final season is coming to an end.
Mall should be an interesting screen test, as the movie’s success will indicate whether Americans can handle such a wrenching perspective on their own suburban lifestyles. In addition, audiences will see whether Chelsea Handler can handle anything other than comedy, as her range – Comedy Central specials and a VMA hosting stint – doesn’t suggest much real acting chops.

  2. This article seems somewhat dated--as the author refers to the 10th and final season of LOCI as coming to an end. Still, looking forward to this project getting started.
